Are you guys in holiday mode yet? I sure hope so because time is just flying by in between buying holiday gifts (Foodie Gift Guide Under $25), getting ready for family get togethers/holiday parties, and tackling baking wishlist. I am looking forward to all of it and trying to keep things simple and healthyish when possible. You know I don’t believe in deprivation and will fully support if you want to enjoy an extra serving of pumpkin bread pudding // handful of chocolate truffles // dozen of samosa bites. Samosa bites are my go-to appetizers for parties and potlucks because they are super quick to put together + meet vegetarian & vegan lifestyle + everyone loves bite-sized food, no?
Samosas are typically deep-fried with spiced potatoes or other meat filling and enjoyed as a snack. They are probably one of my favorite things to order at Indian restaurants but when it comes to making it at home, I like to stick with baked version aka –> samosa galette. It’s totally fuss free as no deep-frying is involved, hello healthier version. I’d totally make samosa galette for a small, relaxing get togethers but for holiday parties, Samosa Bites win.
Every one does samosa filling little differently; you can try with individual spices if you have a stocked spice rack, otherwise curry powder a la Sprouts works great because it already contains a lot of those spices in the mix. I am adding this to my “must have spices” list as it is versatile for recipes like weeknight chicken curry, roasted chickpeas, and curried carrot coconut soup.
The dough or the pastry is a really important for samosas; crispier and flakier the better. For these Samosa Bites, I am using mini phyllo pastry shells which turns crispy and flaky. Even though these are fully baked, ready to be filled and served, I suggest you bake them for 5-8 minutes to warm and crisp them up a little bit more. Most leading grocery store should have them in the freezer section along with desserts, pie crust, pastry sheets etc.
I have taken Samosa Bites to countless parties and everyone loves them. This holiday season, I hope Samosa Bites will make an appearance at your party too meanwhile keeping things less stressful and healthy-ish for you and your guests. Feel free to make the potato filling ahead of time and simply warm them right before serving.
