Homemade Muesli

I am partnering with Farmer Direct Co-Op to bring you Homemade Muesli; a nutritious  option for breakfast & snack  + perfect as homemade gift this holiday season.

Clearly, over the years I have become an oat lover. I use them in the form of overnight oats, granola, breakfast cookies, snack bars, and even savory porridge. To those of you who say quick & healthy breakfast isn't doable seriously need to look into oat-based recipes, one of which is Homemade Muesli. Muesli & granola are pretty similar except that muesli is not baked (only lightly toasted or dry) and it doesn't have sweetener or oil as a binder for crunchy, clustered texture. Like granola, muesli is flexible when it comes to grains, nuts, seeds but lower in sugar and doesn't require additional fats.

Muesli has been around since the 20th century, developed by a Swiss physician Maximilian Bircher-Benner as a healthful dietary supplement for his patients.  You can make the famous Bircher Muesli, commonly known as overnight oats // top yogurt with muesli + berries // cereal alternative with milk.

For Homemade Muesli mix, I used regular rolled oats from Farmer Direct, which are fair- trade, farmer-owned in North America and organic! You can bulk it up with other grains such as amaranth, sorghum, buckwheat, quinoa (which I used here) based on your preference and lifestyle. Next comes your choice of nuts, seeds, and dried fruits.

You can measure out everything, mix, and store them in an air-tight container. However, I prefer to toast my oats for a slightly nutty texture. If you use other grains such as quinoa, millet etc you will have to cook/toast/puff them accordingly. For nuts, you can go with the raw ones but personally, I like roasted ones for the texture and taste.

In between all the chocolate truffles & bite-size appetizers, make a large batch of Homemade Muesli to keep you nourished.. These are extremely easy to put together, super nutritious, and customizable, which is why you need to make an extra batch plus some more for your loved ones as a gift this holiday season.


Homemade Muesli

Serves: about 4 cups

Ingredients

  • 1 cup quinoa
  • 2 cups regular rolled oats
  • 1 cup roasted mix nuts (cashew, almond,sunflower, walnut)
  • 1/4 cup chia seeds
  • 1/2 cup dried cherries

Instructions

  1. Rinse quinoa under running water few times. Drain water.
  2. Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Place quinoa on a skillet and stir it occasionally. Let it cook/toast lightly until it starts popping for about 15 minutes. Remove from the skillet and keep it aside in a large bowl.
  3. Add oats to the skillet and let it toast for 8-10 minutes. Remove it from the skillet and mix it with quinoa.
  4. Mix remaining ingredients such as nuts, chia seeds, and dried cherries and stir them evenly.
  5. Store it in an airtight container
